What if the Adoptive Family Doesn’t Love my Baby as Their Own?

By Isabelle Sitchon

As an expectant mother going through an unplanned pregnancy, the journey ahead of you may be difficult. There are many questions and worries to be concerned about, including what sort of options there are for your baby. However, worrying and searching for these answers is normal–doing your research and knowing what your decisions entail is important for you as an expectant mother. If you are considering putting your child up for adoption, you may even be worried about their adoptive family. At Adoption Choices of Arizona, our trained specialists can help answer your questions and provide further information on adoptive families. In this short blog, we’ll explain more about adoptive families and the matching process in detail.

How do I find a family that’s willing to adopt my child?

When the time comes for you to find an adoptive family for your child, your counselor at Adoption Choices can introduce you to awaiting families. Depending on the adoption type, the level of communication and openness during this process can vary. In a semi-open and open adoption, it will be possible for you to communicate with the adoptive parents. This communication will usually take place through an intermediary, such as an adoptive agency for semi-open adoptions. The contact between either party in an open adoption can include letters, emails, phone calls, texts, or even in-person visits.

There is no contact between the birth parents and adoptive parents for a closed adoption, although social/medical information may be disclosed. No matter the adoption type, know that you are taking huge leaps for your baby and their future. The adoption journey is unique to each person, and each choice you make for your child is valid and reasonable.

While making an adoption plan, make sure that you include any preferences you have for the adoptive family. These preferences can vary–from the type of environment and location you’d want your baby to grow up to the family’s religious and political beliefs. Knowing which qualities you’re looking for will help us determine which family profiles we should provide you. Family profiles can include:

  • Family photos
  • A biography or short written profile
  • Family history
  • Information about their lifestyle, beliefs, hobbies, etc.
  • Contact information

Choosing an adoptive family for your child is a decision that you are in complete control of. However, we know that this is a crucial matter for the sake of their future–which can be stressful for anyone harboring this responsibility. Deciding on a future family for your baby is extremely important, and we don’t want you to rush through it. If you struggle to make a choice, consider talking to friends and family for a second eye. Although this decision is in your hands, reaching out for support is okay. With a supportive circle, it can ease the weight off your back and help you see things more clearly.

Our adoption agencies in Arizona can guide you through this part of the adoption process as well. Your caseworker is familiar with setting up loving families through adoption, so they can offer advice and answer any questions you have.

How do I know that the family will love my baby?

What may be even more difficult than choosing an adoptive family is knowing whether that family will love your child or not. The parent(s) that you choose should welcome your baby with loving arms. At Adoption Choices of Arizona, we make sure that our families are fit to raise your child before placement happens. Families here are obligated to go through a thorough home/certification study and a background check. In addition to those measures, parents are required to complete post-placement supervisory visits conducted by our caseworkers. Adoption Choices will ensure that your child is being loved and cared for as they grow up in their new home.

Although our adoption agencies in Arizona thoroughly review our families, it’s important to know that adoptive parents also have their reasons for adoption. They may be unable to have a baby of their own or are in a situation where it may prove difficult. When a family decides to choose adoption, they will certainly come with their hearts and minds open to a new member of the family. Rest assured that your child will most definitely be loved by their adoptive parent(s).
