The Birth Father’s Role In Adoption

By Rose O’Connor

When you are placing your baby for adoption, it can be an emotional and stressful time. You may have a variety of questions that want to be answered. That is why Adoption Choices of Arizona is here to help you with every step of your journey! Here at Adoption Choices of Arizona, we assist with unplanned pregnancy help, the adoption process, and post-placement services.

What Role Does the Birth Father Play in Adoption?

You may be wondering if the birth father plays a prominent role in the process. The answer is yes for a couple of steps. These steps involve the support of your adoption plan. When you are going through your adoption plan, you are outlining the significant parts of your personalized needs. This personalized outline of your plan can be outlined together. Together, you will be able to choose the adoptive family and the type of adoption you want.

If you and the birth father are not together, he can still play a part in the adoption. Moreover, in that case, you can create your own personalized adoption plan. An example may be if you two choose different types of adoption. If you are interested in an open adoption, but the birth father is interested in a closed adoption, this can be arranged by your adoption specialist.

What are the Steps of the Adoption Process and The Birth Father’s Involvement?

When you place your baby for adoption, you will go through the adoption process. Some of the steps include what the birth father’s involvement is. As previously mentioned, the birth father’s role mainly includes the adoption plan. Therefore, here are the detailed steps of what you and the birth father’s role is.

Step 1: Contact Adoption Choices of Arizona

When you contact us, you will be met with a licensed agency. Additionally, you will be met with your adoption specialist!

Step 2: Schedule a Meeting with Your Adoption Specialist

Your adoption specialist will be right by your side during your journey! You can use any form of contact, such as face-to-face, video call, phone, or other forms. Choose the type of contact that you are the most comfortable with!

Step 3: Create your Adoption Plan and List Your Important Needs

Your adoption specialist will provide you with the important paperwork to continue your process. Additionally, your adoption specialist will guide you through what everything means.

Your adoption specialist will also assist you with financial assistance, transportation, expenses, and medical care. Additionally, your adoption specialist will help you find a doctor to help with prenatal and medical care. Your adoption specialist will help you create your adoption plan. With the birth father’s involvement, he will assist you with outlining the plan as well.

Step 4: Time To Review Adoptive Family Profiles

Know that you are in charge of choosing the adoptive family. You can list out your needs for you and your child. With the birth father, you both can decide what is best for your child. Your adoption specialist will then bring a variety of family profiles to choose from based on your needs. If you still feel like you are not satisfied with the given profiles, no problem! We will bring out more family profiles to choose from.

Step 5: Your Matched Adoptive Family

If you are deciding on a family with the birth father, you will then both finalize on an adoptive family. You will also do the same step if you are creating your own plan as well. Your adoption specialist will be right by your side to guide you in choosing a family.

Step 6: Introducing the Adoptive Family

Depending on the type of adoption you choose, you can decide if you want to meet the family or not. If you do, your adoption specialist will assist you with scheduling a meeting with them on any form of contact you choose. The same goes for the birth father’s involvement as well.

Step 9: Your Due Date With Your Adoption Specialist

With the birth father’s role, he will also work with you on your hospital plan if you plan to make your adoption journey together. The same goes if you are making your own hospital plan. You will be able to make your decisions on the hospital plan as well, and your adoption specialist will be there to assist you. This hospital plan outlines who you want to be in the room, your delivery plan, and naming your baby.

Step 10: The Birth of Your Child and The Departure with The Adoptive Family

The baby will depart with your chosen adoptive family. Additionally, your adoption specialist will assist in scheduling a date for you to give your and/or the birth father’s final consent and relinquish parental rights.

Step 11: Post-Placement After the Adoption Process

You and your adoptive family will agree to post-placement communication depending on the type of adoption you choose. Therefore, your expenses will continue to be paid for 6 weeks post-delivery. In addition, counseling is also available to you and the birth father at no cost.

Is Consent Required During the Adoption Process?

When the child is born, you and the birth father will sign some consent paperwork that will allow the adoption to take place in your journey. Furthermore, these consents cannot be signed until 12 hours after the birth of your child. This is according to Kansas adoption law. However, with the Missouri adoption law, these consents cannot be signed until 48 hours after the birth.
