LGBTQ+ Adoption FAQ with Adoption Choices of Arizona

By Isabelle Sitchon

If you are considering putting your child up for adoption, you are already making an incredibly brave decision. Your journey as a birth mother in the adoption process may include making even more important decisions for your child. Even though you have a difficult path ahead, choosing this option means that your baby will have a chance to grow up in a loving, accepting home. At Adoption Choices of Arizona, we are here to help in selecting an adoptive family for your child. Regardless of how involved you would like to be in the process, we will make sure that they are welcomed into loving arms.

In this crucial part of the process, you may be debating about the type of family you want for your child. It’s possible that you may be considering an LGBTQ+ couple to adopt your baby. We are an organization that does not discriminate against race, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. Every household at our adoption agencies in Arizona wants to give your child the best life that they deserve. If you are a birth mother seeking to understand more about LGBTQ+ adoption, we encourage you to read these FAQs.

Why should I consider a same-sex/LGBTQ+ adoptive family for my baby?

Choosing an adoptive family is an important choice to decide on. An adoption counselor will work with you when you come to that step of the adoption process. We advise you to look over all of your options to be fully informed of the decision you make. It can be beneficial to know all of your options when reviewing families for your baby.

For what reasons should I choose an LGBTQ+ adoptive family?

There are many reasons to choose an LGBTQ+ adoptive family for your baby. These families accept and understand individuals familiar with self-identity, diversity, and community. You will find that your child will grow up in an environment that encourages them to be confident in themselves. One that welcomes loves, and accepts others with all of their heart. One that is comfortable with differences in lifestyles and culture. Similar to many other adoptive families, and LGBTQ+ family can help your child grow up into a wonderful individual.

How do I know that my child will be safe in the family?

As all of our families, our LGBTQ+ adoptive families are subject to an evaluation to ensure that your child will be safe and loved. Our specialists at our adoption agencies in Arizona conduct home interviews, as well as background checks for all potential households. We carefully screen them to ensure that your child is in a secure and prepared environment to grow up. If you wish, the adoptive family may even come to meet or call with you before your baby is born.

Will it be harder to go through an LGBTQ+ adoption process?

The adoption process can be a long and difficult journey, but it will not be harder than any other family’s. Each birth mother’s experience is different. However, all of our parents go through the same process in order to be a potential adoptive family. What’s common with all of our families is that they are willing to walk hand in hand with your child as they walk down the path of life.

Will my child grow up the same as others in an LGBTQ+ household?

Your child is sure to be happy, healthy, and loved in an LGBTQ+ family with Adoption Choices. Their adoptive parents will support them as they grow up and will be surrounded by loving members of their community. LGBTQ+ parents, like many other adoptive parents, are truly ready to give your child the best life they can have. It’s up to you as the birth mother to decide which family you would like your child to be a part of.

Should I be worried if my child won’t be growing up with a mother/father figure in a same-sex adoptive family?

As a birth mother, it is alright to be a little concerned about this. Having the traditional role of mother/father in a family has been thought to be the best environment for a child to grow up in for a long time. However, when it comes to raising a baby, there is no exact right or wrong. The idea of family has greatly evolved across the years, and we’re seeing families of all shapes and sizes. Each adoptive family you see has a different structure and way of functioning, but there is always one waiting to love your child. What matters is that the family you choose is willing to accept and care for them in a happy home.

Will my child be bullied because their adoptive parents are LGBTQ+?

Unfortunately, those in the queer community still face discrimination today from those who are against LGBTQ+. It is possible that your child may face that same discrimination because their parents are LGBTQ+. Throughout their difficulties, however, your child’s adoptive parents will be there to support them. LGBTQ+ adoptive families are familiar with these situations and can help your child.

Most importantly, your child’s experiences can help them grow up into a stronger, more confident person. Alongside their adoptive parents, they may become more educated on the world around them and embrace diversity and culture.

What will happen after the adoption process?

After the adoption, a counselor will work with you to schedule a court date for you to give your consent. You will have the option to know how your baby is doing with the family as well. Our adoptive families are encouraged to send updates and/or pictures to the birth mother after adoption. Open adoption will allow you to maintain further contact through visits, phone calls, and letters if you and the adoptive family agree. Your specialist can answer any additional questions and concerns you have about the aftermath of the adoption.

How do I choose an LGBTQ+ family?

Once you are ready and have selected your adoption plan, your specialist will give you family profiles to review. These profiles will include information about their home, hobbies, lifestyle, etc.

Choosing an adoptive family for your child can be one of the hardest decisions to make in the adoption process. If you need support in making this decision, your adoption specialist is here to help you. They have worked with many other birth mothers before, so they are familiar with the stage of choosing an adoptive family.
