As you are preparing as a prospective adoptive parent for the adoption process, it can be easy to fall into the traps – whether they come through the internet or via word of mouth – of common myths about birth mothers. Don’t fear, though, because Adoption Choices of Arizona is here to help you navigate your way out and tell you what’s not true. Here are some of the most common myths about birth mothers that you should utterly avoid.

All birth mothers are drug-addicted teenagers or promiscuous

This myth is simply erroneous and disrespectful to the mothers who don’t fall into this category in the slightest. Some birth mothers are in healthy marriages and merely aren’t ready to have children, while others realize they have too low of an income to support a child. There are countless reasons that a birth mother may search for an adoption plan, and it’s unbelievably wrong to assume why they’re doing so, especially by suggesting it’s due to something with a negative connotation.

Birth mothers who search for an adoption plan don’t love their children

This one should be quite obvious since the reason they’re likely searching for an adoption plan is because they love their child immensely and only want the best for them. They know they can’t give them the best life possible, so they’re looking for someone or a couple who can. Deciding to search for an adoption plan is never easy, no matter the circumstances, and not recognizing this may only break the birth mother’s heart even more.

Birth mothers will change their mind down the road and try to get their child back

Despite what well-known movies may tell you, this is highly unrealistic. Birth mothers spend a lot of time debating the effects of adoption, and they wouldn’t have made the decision to search for a plan if they didn’t 100% feel it wasn’t the right choice. Plus, once the birth mother signs the papers, she can’t change her mind even if she wanted to. This is an extremely rare case, and there’s not much to worry about here.
