Choosing a Last-Minute Adoption at the Hospital

By Elle Kerrigan

If you’re pregnant and considering a last-minute adoption, you might be surprised to hear that many women have gone down the same road. Here at Adoption Choices of Arizona, we have helped many birth mothers start the adoption process from the hospital. Since 2011, our local adoption agency has been providing compassionate care to mothers, adoptive families, and children throughout the state. Adoption agencies in Arizona are a helpful resource for anyone with questions about choosing adoption during labor or after giving birth. We know that this time can be stressful, so we hope that it’s comforting to know that it’s never too late to place a baby for adoption. Our experience includes adoptions from the hospital, so you can be reassured that you are in good hands.

How is Last-Minute Adoption Different?

Last-minute adoption really isn’t all that different from an adoption that began earlier. The only difference is the amount of time you have to create an adoption plan. An adoption plan is a layout you create with your specialist to account for the details of your adoption. This covers choosing your adoptive family (if you’d like), planning your birth, picking your type of adoption, and discussing post-placement support for you. The adoption plan also covers any financial assistance you may qualify for to help with medical bills and transportation if you are choosing adoption from the hospital. That doesn’t mean they won’t be accounted for. It just means the process will be quicker. You will have less time to complete typical adoption tasks, like meeting the adoptive family ahead of time. That doesn’t mean your adoption will be any less successful or even any different. Our adoption specialists at Adoption Choices of Arizona pay just as much attention to last-minute adoptions. You will have the same level of care and the same resources as any other birth mother.

What are the Steps of a Hospital Adoption?

Step 1: Contact Adoption Choices of Arizona

It is easy to contact us from the hospital. We have both a call and text line that you can contact at any time. We will assign a specialist to your case that can meet you at the hospital and begin the process.

Step 2: Create an adoption plan from the hospital

Even after you have given birth, you can create an adoption plan. Your specialist will ask you what kind of adoption you would like to pursue (open, semi-open, or closed). This will inform the rest of the process. You can choose an adoptive family from the hospital, and they are even able to meet you and the baby within hours.

Step 3: Meet the adoptive family

If you choose to meet the adoptive family, you can do so for the first time at the hospital. It will not be a bad surprise for them to be a part of a hospital adoption. Our families know that a last-minute adoption is a possibility, and they’ll be very excited to meet the baby! Placing your baby for adoption is a courageous and giving act. You are providing so much happiness to this family and your child’s future, as well as your own future.

Step 4: Sign a form of relinquishment

You will need to sign a form of consent to adopt at least 72 hours after your baby is born. This is according to Arizona law. Adoption agencies in Arizona, like Adoption Choices of Arizona, are very knowledgeable in the state laws regarding adoption. Your specialist will make sure to review any paperwork or answer any of your questions about the legal side of adoption.

Step 5: Stay in contact with your specialist

Post-placement support is available to you. We are here for you even after your child has been placed.
