Three Benefits of Transracial Adoption

Let’s face it. Choosing to place your child for adoption is a scary, brave decision. But, considering transracial adoption, especially given today’s tense racial climate, is even scarier. Despite the tension, though, transracial adoption is becoming more and more common. With mainstream TV shows like NBC’s This is Us embracing the idea of transracial adoption, it is becoming more normalized by society each and every day.

We here at Adoption Choices of Arizona encourage you, as a birth mother, to consider all types of adoptions – including transracial adoption. Here are three benefits of transracial adoption.

Three Benefits of Transracial Adoption

  • Your Child will be Loved

First, and most importantly, your child will be loved regardless of his or her skin color. Adoptive families who choose transracial adoption understand the stigma that comes with it, so they will love your child with all their hearts. They will accept your child for who they are, despite the stigmas, and will give your child the best life possible.

  • Your Child will Experience Cultural Differences

Secondly, your child and his or her family will have cross-cultural experiences. In the words of an adoptive mother, “[Transracial adoptions] pull you into another culture. You have to be willing to engage in your child’s cultural background and learn from friends who share their skin tone and/or racial background. You get to learn the histories of other cultures that aren’t taught in schools. You get to befriend people who don’t look like you or grow up with the same traditions. It truly makes you embrace other races and colors.

  • Transracial Adoption Helps Break Societal Stigma

TV shows alone cannot break a stigma. The third and final benefit of transracial adoption is that by choosing transracial adoption, you are helping challenge society’s picture of a perfect family. The more transracial families there are, the more normalized adoption between races becomes. However, in order for this to happen, we need more birth mothers like you to be willing to place their child with a family of a different race. Together, we can change the world, one family at a time.
