Congratulations, you’ve completed your adoption training and application! You’re well on your way to finishing the adoption process. What comes next is the home study, a period you shouldn’t worry too much over with preparation and simply knowing you were made to be a great parent. Adoption Choices of Arizona is here to ensure your mind is at ease during this stressful time! Here are some tips on how to make sure you’re absolutely ready for your home study.
What types of home studies does Adoption Choices of Arizona supply?
Adoption Choices of Arizona provides three types of home studies: for domestic adoptions, designated adoptions, which involve locating the birth mother on your own, and gestational carriers or surrogates.
What will I need to provide?
During the minimum of four hours required in Arizona that your social worker must spend with you over the course of at least two visits — including a mandatory two hours inside your home — there’s a lot you need to provide. Be ready to show your social worker birth certificates, marriage licenses, or divorce decrees as issued by court; your tax return from the prior year; your fingerprint and CPS clearance cards; attestation of your employment and insurance; proof you completed your adoption education; an autobiography; and five letters of recommendation, three from friends and two from family. Even though the time requirements with your social worker don’t seem like a lot, the entire process will last roughly four to six months. It can speed up, however, if you have all these documents ready to go.
What should I expect during the personal interview?
During the two mandatory interviews, one of which will take place in your home, your social worker will ask several questions on why you chose to adopt and to ensure your home is a sufficient environment for a child. The best way to garner your social worker’s acceptance is to be genuine because you know you’re fit to be a parent — and your social worker will soon see that, too.
