JaNae Goodrich is one of six adopted children. Her parents and two oldest siblings are white. The family was raised in a predominantly white neighborhood, and JaNae noticed it. She was aware that she was different, and took special notice when someone “like her” was around.
Although sometimes it was difficult, JaNae was raised to embrace who she is; and that includes her skin color. Some say that the color of skin doesn’t matter; to JaNae it does because it’s part of who we are. It matters in the same way that our personality or our height or our likes and dislikes matter. In the end, JaNae is grateful for her transracial adoption. Because when it comes to parental love, skin color is inconsequential.
